Monica Cornejo and Anabel Gonzalez Injured in a Tire Blowout Accident on Interstate 35 in Laredo, Texas

Laredo, TX –  A two-vehicle crash on Interstate 35 left one woman in critical condition and another injured. The incident happened Monday morning.

The victims have been identified as 44-year-old Anabel Gonzalez, the driver of a silver Nissan March, and 33-year-old Monica Cornejo, the driver of a gold Buick Enclave.

According to reports, the silver Nissan March and the gold Buick Enclave collided in the middle lane of the northbound lanes. Authorities believe a blowout of the Nissan’s rear driver-side tire contributed to the crash.

The Buick struck the Nissan from behind, causing the Nissan to lurch forward. Gonzalez was thrown from her vehicle and dragged by her car.

Gonzalez was flown to the San Antonio Military Medical Center. She is expected to recover.

Cornejo was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

No other details have been released.

Tire blowouts are not freak accidents.

Most people will hear of a tire blowout and automatically assume the vehicle’s owner is responsible. As a society, we tend to equate healthy tires with good maintenance. Many also believe that a burst tire happens by chance or a case of bad luck. This isn’t always true: sometimes, tires blow out because of a defect. When a tire blows out due to a defect, it’s not about chance or maintenance— it’s because the manufacturer messed up and put its customer at risk of serious injury or death.

Tire manufacturers have a duty to ensure their products are safe for our roadways. When they prioritize profits over safety, they make and sell defective tires, leading to premature blowouts and causing harm to innocent people.

Unfortunately, incidents like the one with the Nissan March are not isolated. In our decades of practice, we have handled many similar cases. Tire blowouts can happen to anyone at any time at no fault of the driver. Manufacturers need to be held accountable when a defective tire causes someone serious injury or to lose their life.

Tire blowout accidents are complex and require trained professionals to examine the tire in question to see if a defect indeed caused the failure. This is what needs to happen in this incident before it can be determined who is responsible for this horrific crash. May all the facts come to light soon.
