Pedestrian Critically Injured in Hit-and-Run Accident Involving Semi-Truck near Wilson Ave. and Belmont Blvd in Kansas City, Missouri

Kansas City, Mo. — A pedestrian sustained critical injuries in a hit-and-run collision with a commercial truck. The incident happened Tuesday morning near Wilson Ave. and Belmont Blvd.

According to reports, a semi-truck trailer traveling southbound on Belmont Blvd. made a sharp left turn onto eastbound Wilson Ave., causing the semi-truck to veer up over the curb and through the grassy median.

The truck struck and possibly ran over a pedestrian who was standing on the sidewalk and then collided with a wooden telephone pole.

The truck driver left the scene without stopping.

The pedestrian was transported to a hospital in critical condition.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is urged to contact the Kansas City Police Department immediately.

Thoughts on pedestrian deaths

What a horrific incident that leaves us grappling with many unanswered questions. What kind of driver fails to stop after striking a pedestrian? Was the driver inexperienced, distracted, speeding, or impaired? These are common factors we see in hit-and-run collisions. One thing is certain: the truck driver must be found and held accountable for the harm they have caused.

Furthermore, it prompts us to question the trucking company’s practices. Do they thoroughly vet their drivers before hiring them? Are they vigilant in monitoring for repeated red flags or violations on their driving records? Do they prioritize safety training and cultivate a culture of safety before profits? If the trucking company neglected its responsibilities in any way, it, too, must be held accountable for this tragic accident.

May the injured pedestrian fully recover, and may they get the justice they so rightfully deserve.
