Teofilo Gonzalez Killed when He is Crushed by a 5,000-pound Mixer Drum in Dodge Center, Minnesota

Dodge Center, Minn. – A Con-Tech Manufacturing worker died after being crushed by a 5,000-pound mixer drum. The incident happened Monday morning in Dodge Center.

According to preliminary reports, Teofilo Gonzalez, a 10-year employee with Con-Tech Manufacturing, was in the process of cutting a crossbeam support on a dolly, supporting a 5,000-pound mixer drum when the dolly failed, causing the heavy machinery to fall on Gonzalez.

Fellow workers utilized two forklifts to remove the drum from Gonzalez to perform CPR. However, despite their efforts, Gonzalez could not be revived.

A Minnesota Department of Labor spokesperson affirmed that OSHA had responded to the accident and has opened an inquiry into the incident.

Thoughts on workplace accidents

Workers deserve to do their jobs without risk of harm or death. Even when their work is dangerous. One of the main responsibilities of employers is to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone in the workplace. This involves implementing thorough equipment inspection routines and enforcing comprehensive safety control programs to prevent harm. Was this practiced at this job site?

Fatal workplace accidents can stem from various factors, including faulty equipment or improper safety procedures. This is why regular equipment inspections are important to reduce the risk of hazards, along with safety training for workers on correctly handling machinery. When companies fail to enforce this in the workforce, it can lead to catastrophic consequences.

Trained professionals will need to examine the dolly in question to determine whether it is defective. In addition, insight into the company’s work culture and safety practices will help determine whether any negligence or wrongdoing contributed to this accident.
