Two Construction Workers Seriously Injured After a Beam Fell on a Cherry Picker Bucket and Pinned Them on Interstate 10

San Antonio, TX — Two construction workers are in serious condition after their cherry picker bucket fell to the ground. The incident happened on Interstate 10 along the 1604 access road early Friday.

According to reports, the men were working construction along the 1604 access road inside a cherry picker bucket, lifting two metal beams into place and attempting to attach them to concrete pillars when a chain holding one of the beams broke.

The beam fell into the cherry picker, causing it to topple to the ground and trapping the workers. Both workers were rushed to a local hospital in serious condition.

Texas Department of Transportation is reviewing safety measures as part of its response to the incident.

Those responsible should come forward and help the injured

Some people may perceive workplace accidents as inevitable, given their frequency. In 2022 alone, 2.3 million work-related injuries required medical attention (Bureau of Labor Statistics). However, the notion that these incidents are unavoidable goes against the fundamental right of individuals to a safe work environment. No one should endure a severe, life-altering injury or loss of life while simply fulfilling their job duties, as it forever impacts both the individual and their family.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, more construction workers suffered injuries and died on the job in 2022 than in any other industry sector. This is unacceptable. Just because some jobs are more hazardous than others does not mean that safety should be compromised. If anything, the greater the risk involved, the more important it becomes to implement stringent safety protocols to safeguard workers.

It is important to investigate what safety protocols were in place in this incident. Was equipment inspected before the job began to ensure it was in proper working condition? Why did the chain holding one of the beams break? Was it defective? Was equipment stored properly when not in use to avoid wear and tear? These are important questions that demand answers.

The individuals harmed in this incident deserve justice for the injuries and the financial hardships they will endure. It’s common for companies involved to try to shift blame onto the workers, alleging they didn’t follow procedures or take sufficient precautions to prevent the incident. This is unjust.

Trained professionals will need to investigate whether negligence by the manufacturer, company, or another party occurred. The injured should be fairly compensated for their pain and suffering if any wrongdoing is found.
