Two People Die in Two crashes Involving a Semi-truck on Interstate 88 in East Moline, Illinois

East Moline, Ill. – Two people died in two separate crashes near the exact location on Interstate 88 Wednesday morning.

According to reports, a box truck collided with the rear end of a semi-truck entering the roadway from the shoulder. The box truck driver died from his injuries at the hospital. His identity is being withheld pending family notification.

Troopers from the Illinois State Police conducted crash reconstruction services, and the semi-truck driver received a citation for violating minimum speed regulations.

While first responders were still at the initial crash scene, another crash occurred just east of the location. A semi-truck slowed down due to the earlier crash scene, and a sedan collided with the rear end of the semi-truck.

The driver of the sedan succumbed to her injuries after being extricated from the vehicle and transported to the hospital. Her identity is being withheld pending family notification.

No further details have been released.

Thoughts on semi-truck collisions

Many assume rear-end collisions are wholly the fault of the motorist who struck the vehicle before them. However, this isn’t always the case. There are instances where the vehicle in front does not give a rear driver sufficient warning to react. When this happens, the front driver may be found to be at fault for any harm suffered in an accident.

According to the news release, a semi-truck entered the roadway from the shoulder below the minimum speed. Why? Traveling at a speed slower than what traffic commands is dangerous. Did the commercial truck have a mechanical issue that should have been addressed prior? Was it a driver error? When motorists lose their lives in accidents like this one, it is important to determine what caused the accident and all parties responsible so they can be held accountable.

This is a complex accident that needs trained professionals to conduct an investigation to determine what went wrong here. One collision led to another crash, and two people lost their lives. The surviving families deserve answers.

May all the facts come to light and all responsible parties be held accountable.
