Woman Suffers Serious Injuries after a Multi-vehicle Accident Involving a Disabled Semi-truck on Interstate 75 in Alachua County, Florida

Alachua County, FL –  A multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 75 in Alachua County resulted in several people suffering minor injuries and one woman left with serious injuries.

According to reports, a pickup truck driving in the center lane attempted to overtake an SUV, pulling a car trailer. As the pickup truck maneuvered to pass in the outside lane, its left side collided with the right side of the SUV’s trailer. The impact caused the SUV to collide with the left side of a tractor-trailer parked along the roadway. This created a chain reaction, and the pickup truck also rear-ended the tractor-trailer, striking the individual working on it.

A woman occupant in the SUV sustained serious injuries. Several others suffered minor injuries.

No other details have been released.

Thoughts on disabled semi-trucks on roadways

At first glance, this accident seems wholly the fault of the pickup truck. However, this case is a bit more complex. Is it wise for a large semi-truck to be next to a lane of moving traffic? Shouldn’t truck drivers and the trucking companies they work for ensure their trucks are free of mechanical issues before they hit the road to avoid a scenario like this one? It seems that had the semi-truck not been parked on the side of the road, this accident likely would not have been nearly as severe.

Large trucks should be well-maintained, and regular inspections should be done to prevent them from suffering a mechanical issue while on the roadway. I recently worked on a case involving a young husband and father who crashed into the rear of a semi-truck parked beside a busy lane, much like this incident. The truck had a flat tire, and the trucker attempted to avoid responsibility by claiming he had no alternative but to stop. However, our investigation revealed that the tire had been consistently underinflated for a prolonged period, suggesting that the trucking company prioritized profit over safety by continually inflating the tire instead of replacing it to prevent future issues. What initially seemed like a reasonable excuse for pulling over and endangering others was really the outcome of a choice to prioritize financial gain over human life. This decision tragically resulted in the loss of a man’s life and left a child without a father. Unfortunately, we are seeing this same thing play out over and over again across the nation.

The at-fault driver who caused the initial accident should be held accountable. However, if the truck was parked negligently, the driver and/or company may very well be partially responsible for the injuries suffered here.
