31-Year-Old Meghan Holman Dies in Single-Vehicle Rollover Crash on US-64 Near Westport

Westport, Okla. — A rollover accident on US-64 eastbound near Westport in Osage County has claimed the life of a Pond Creek woman. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) responded to the scene Thursday morning.

According to OHP, Holman’s vehicle veered off the road to the right, rolling over four times before stopping on its wheels.

The victim has been identified as 31-year-old Meghan Holman, who was fatally injured in the crash and pronounced dead at the scene.

No additional details have been released.

Vehicle Safety Features Critical in Rollover Accidents

In a rollover accident, where vehicles roll multiple times, manufacturers must ensure their safety features protect occupants. But sometimes, this doesn’t happen. Some vehicles have defects that cause occupants serious harm that wouldn’t occur otherwise, such as head, neck, shoulder, traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, and even crushing injuries. When this happens, it may be that the vehicle is defective and failed to protect the occupant as it should have.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety identifies roof crush as one main factor in rollover deaths. Federal standards require roofs to withstand 1.5 times the vehicle’s weight with no more than 5 inches of crush.  Critical safety components like seatbelts and airbags must also function as designed during a rollover. Seatbelts must restrain, and airbags should deploy.  When these systems fail, survivable accidents become fatal.

For the surviving family, investigating the vehicle’s safety systems could reveal whether manufacturing defects contributed to this tragic outcome. While uncovering such information won’t reverse their loss, it may prevent similar tragedies and provide the answers and closure they deserve.
