Driver Critical After Mack Truck Collision on Interstate 29, Mound City, Missouri

Mound City, Mo. — A pickup truck driver is in critical condition following a crash on I-29 in Mound City involving a Mack truck.

According to reports, an 18-year-old from Oregon, Missouri, was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado when he collided with a stopped Mack truck parked on the shoulder of the road.

Authorities say the collision forced the Chevrolet off the roadway, causing it to flip and crash down an embankment.

The driver sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph. Troopers confirmed he was wearing a seatbelt.

No additional information has been released.

Trucks should not park on highways and put passing motorists at risk of serious injury or death.

Trucking companies often try to deflect responsibility in crashes like this by pointing fingers at drivers who collide with parked semis. But let’s be clear – highway shoulders aren’t parking lots. The FMCSA permits shoulder parking only in emergencies, not for convenience or routine stops. It will be important to determine exactly why this truck was parked. If the trucking company claims the truck was parked for emergency reasons, it will be important to investigate further. If wrongdoing is discovered, the young man injured here deserves the compensation and help needed to rebuild his life.

We handled a case recently where a trucking company claimed a flat tire forced the truck to pull over and make an emergency stop. Our investigation revealed the company had repeatedly inflated a bad tire instead of replacing it. What the company framed as an unavoidable emergency was a calculated decision to delay proper maintenance. Their choice to repeatedly refill rather than replace – saving a few hundred dollars in maintenance costs – a bad tire ultimately cost a loving father his life.

The trucking company in this crash may have an excuse for why the truck was parked on the shoulder. However, experience teaches us to look deeper. Will maintenance records show ignored warning signs? What do the truck’s electronic records reveal about the events leading up to the stop?

The driver fighting for recovery deserves answers and the compensation needed to rebuild his life if any wrongdoing is discovered.
