Fatal Interstate 84 Crash: Twin Falls Woman Dies After Semi-Truck Strikes Disabled Honda Pilot with Hazard Lights On

Jerome, Idaho — A fatal collision occurred on I-84 Tuesday morning in Jerome County, claiming the life of a 33-year-old Twin Falls woman.

The incident took place when the woman’s 2006 Honda Pilot broke down in the westbound right lane with hazard lights activated. A westbound 2022 Volvo semi-tractor, driven by a 63-year-old man, collided with the stalled vehicle, causing the vehicle to veer sideways into the median barrier.

The Honda driver succumbed to her injuries despite her wearing a seatbelt.

Authorities arrested the semi-driver on probable cause for felony vehicular manslaughter, and he was transported to the Jerome County Jail.

Surviving family deserves justice for the innocent passing of a loved one

A young woman did everything right when her car broke down: she wore her seatbelt and she activated her hazard lights to warn approaching vehicles. Yet tragically, she still lost her life when a semi-truck crashed into her disabled vehicle. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, commercial truck drivers are 23.2 times more likely to be involved in a crash when they fail to monitor their surroundings properly.

The criminal charges against the truck driver raise serious questions. Why didn’t he see the hazard lights? Was he distracted? The trucking company’s records will help answer these questions. Their electronic logging device will show speed and braking patterns. Dashcam footage could reveal the visibility conditions and the driver’s response time.

The company’s hiring and training practices also need scrutiny. Did they properly screen this driver? Did they enforce safety protocols? Sometimes these crashes reveal a pattern of putting profits ahead of safety – rushing deliveries, pushing tired drivers, or ignoring red flags in driving records.

This young woman’s family deserves to know exactly why this preventable tragedy occurred. A thorough investigation will reveal who shares responsibility for their devastating loss.
