Fatal Mining Site Accident Claims Life of Scott Rhodes in Highland County, Ohio

Highland County, Ohio – A workplace accident claimed the life of a 50-year-old employee at a sand and gravel mining operation in Highland County.

According to a preliminary report from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), Scott Rhodes was performing maintenance at the Ervin Hill mining site when he became entangled in a log washer.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration has not yet released additional details.

The surviving family deserves answers

For families, finding out the full story of what caused their loved one to die while doing a routine job can be difficult. Employers may hesitate to disclose critical information, and witnesses might remain silent out of fear of retaliation. These challenges often stem from a deeper issue: workplace accidents frequently reveal systemic problems that are not immediately visible.

In this case, questions need to be asked. Was the log washer equipped with proper lockout/tagout procedures? Were sufficient safety guards in place to prevent such an incident? Fatal injuries like this often occur due to inadequate safety measures, poorly designed equipment, or a failure to follow established protocols. Sometimes, the manufacturer, employer, or another entity may bear responsibility for the harm caused.

Families grieving a loss due to a workplace accident may have the right to pursue compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, emotional anguish, and other damages—even if the fault is shared. They deserve advocates who will seek justice, demand accountability, and provide support throughout the legal process.

Our firm has successfully handled cases involving severe injuries caused by unsafe machinery, including incidents where workers’ limbs were caught in equipment like augers. We have held negligent parties accountable and understand how critical proper safety measures are to preventing tragedies like this.

It is my hope that Mr. Rhodes’ family receives the answers, justice, and support they deserve during this incredibly difficult time.
