Troy Caldwell Killed in Crash with a Semi-truck on Interstate 64 in Bath County, Kentucky: Driver Facing Charges

Bath County, Ky. – A tow truck driver was fatally struck on Wednesday evening in a crash on Interstate 64.

The victim, identified as 54-year-old Troy Caldwell, was loading a vehicle onto a rollback tow truck when he was hit by a commercial vehicle traveling westbound.

The commercial vehicle’s driver has been charged with Tampering with Physical Evidence. Authorities believe he was watching YouTube videos on a tablet at the time of the crash and attempted to turn off the device and conceal it during the investigation.

An investigation is needed to determine all responsible parties

Accidents like this leave families heartbroken, shocked, angry — and full of questions. How could something like this happen? Why was an irresponsible driver allowed behind the wheel? The family deserves answers from authorities and professionals during such a difficult time.

While it’s a positive step that the truck driver is being held accountable for their reckless behavior—watching videos and tampering with evidence—the negligence may not stop there. Responsibility could also lie with the trucking company that hired and allowed this driver to operate the truck.

Trucking companies must have strict hiring and monitoring practices to identify unsafe drivers and prevent accidents like this from even happening. Were there any previous complaints or warning signs about this driver that were ignored?

Even though trucking companies may want to avoid having their hiring and training practices scrutinized, legal tools like depositions can reveal the full story. These mechanisms, available through the legal process, help uncover essential information and ensure all parties responsible are held accountable.

Uncovering the truth after a fatal crash not only provides grieving families with the answers they need but also helps prevent future accidents by exposing unsafe drivers and companies. We hope the family receives professional guidance to find the answers and closure during this challenging time.
