George Meletis Killed After Struck in a Van Crash at West Phoenix Transit Center in Arizona

Phoenix, AZ – A man died after being struck by a large van known as a Circulator. The incident happened on Monday morning at a West Phoenix transit center near 79th Avenue and Van Buren Street.

According to a police spokesperson, the incident occurred when one of the two other employees inside the van took their foot off the brakes, causing it to move forward and striking 59-year-old George Meletis. The van stopped after colliding with a nearby city bus.

George Meletis, an employee of a third-party company that operates city buses, was pronounced dead at the scene. The two employees inside the van were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

No further information has been released.

Workplace fatalities demand a thorough investigation

When someone dies on the job, their family is left with a void and many unanswered questions. They need to understand what happened and how it could have been prevented. Often, families feel they’re not getting the full story about their loved one’s death. In these cases, they have every right to seek more information beyond the initial reports.

Getting additional details can be challenging. Companies may hold back information, particularly if safety issues are involved. Workers who witnessed the incident might hesitate to speak up, fearing negative consequences at work.

The legal processes can help uncover the truth. Tools like depositions can reveal important facts about the accident. They can answer questions like: Why did the van driver take his foot off the brakes prematurely? Was the driver adequately trained to operate a large vehicle? What went wrong here that the driver did not see Mr. Meletis?

These answers matter because not all workplaces consistently follow safety rules. Some may cut corners to save time or money, skipping important safety steps or training. When this happens, families deserve to know.

While some may call these incidents unavoidable accidents, that’s not always the case. Accidents can often be prevented.

We hope the surviving family here receives the support they need to find answers during this difficult time.
