Hurricane Helene Flooding Sweeps Away 11 Impact Plastics Factory Employees in Tennessee: Five Rescued, Four Missing, Two Confirmed Dead

Erwin, TN – Floodwaters brought on by Hurricane Helene swept away eleven workers from a plastics factory in rural Tennessee. While five of the workers were rescued, two were confirmed dead, and four remain missing as of Tuesday.

The flooding occurred on Friday as rain from the hurricane intensified. Workers at Impact Plastics were sent home after water flooded the parking lot and the power went out. Unfortunately, some employees were unable to escape the rising waters.

Authorities report that some workers managed to drive away, but others were stranded on a blocked road where the floodwaters swept vehicles away. The Nolichucky River overflowed, submerging the nearby highway and reaching the factory doors.

Reports state the workers were not given permission to leave, and permission was given too late.

Reports that workers were not permitted to leave as flood water became more threatening is concerning

When a workplace accident results in a fatality, the grieving family is left in shock, searching for answers. They often have many questions about what happened and what steps they can take to seek justice and closure. Families deserve to know the truth; sometimes, professionals must dig more deeply than the initial reports to uncover all the facts.

It’s not uncommon for families to feel they’re not getting the whole story. This concern is justified — employers may be reluctant to share information if it reveals safety lapses, and witnesses might hesitate to speak up, fearing consequences for their jobs. However, a thorough investigation can bring critical details to light. Legal measures like depositions and discovery can help answer important questions: Were safety procedures ignored as floodwaters rose? Why weren’t employees given enough time to evacuate? These are essential points that need to be addressed.

Employee safety should always be a priority, but some workplaces may overlook safety rules to prioritize productivity. When such failures happen, families deserve the truth. Learning what led to a workplace accident provides closure and helps prevent future tragedies by fixing unsafe conditions.

Our thoughts are with all those impacted by this disaster.
