Daniel Lindsey, Chelsea Clark, and Marcos Campos Killed in an Accident with a Semi-truck on Martin County Crash

Lubbock, TX – Three Lubbock residents lost their lives in a fatal crash with a semi-truck in Martin County Friday morning.

According to DPS, a Kenworth truck with a trailer experienced a tire blowout, prompting the driver to pull over. Due to the shoulder slope, the trucker did not fully move the truck off the highway.

A car driven by 29-year-old Daniel Lindsey collided with the trailer and the reflective triangles placed on the road. Lindsey and his two passengers, 34-year-old Chelsea Clark and 54-year-old Marcos Campos, were pronounced dead at the scene.

No additional details have been released.

Thoughts on semi-truck collisions

This incident has many troubling aspects. While the trucking company and the public may look at this and blame the driver of the car for running into the truck, that is not fair. First and foremost, you can’t obstruct a moving lane of traffic with an 18-wheeler. This is extremely dangerous and routinely results in serious injury or death.

While the trucking company knows this, they will likely try to say that the tire failure prevented the driver from moving to a safe location.  But we need to ask why a large semi-truck with mechanical issues was on the road with a bad tire to begin with. Big trucks require regular inspections and maintenance to prevent these kinds of accidents. Did the trucking company keep up with necessary maintenance? Was this an unexpected breakdown, or was it a recurring issue that was only temporarily fixed to save money?

The answers to these questions will help determine how much responsibility the trucking company bears and ensure those at fault are held accountable. For example, in a recent case we handled, a young father collided with a semi-truck parked dangerously close to a lane of moving traffic. The truck had a flat tire, and the company tried to justify parking next to the road due to the tire failure. However, our investigation revealed that the tire failed because it hadn’t been properly maintained. It was underinflated, and the company knew it was losing air but refilled it before each trip instead of replacing it. This negligence, disguised as a reasonable decision to pull over, ultimately led to a man’s death and a child losing their father. The trucking company was held responsible for the crash.

Many people will be deeply affected by this tragic accident that should have never occurred. Losing a loved one brings immense emotional and physical pain, along with unexpected financial burdens. When these losses result from someone else’s negligence, those affected deserve the right to hold the responsible party accountable.

May the surviving families find strength during this difficult time of grief.
