James Cooper Dies in a Rollover Truck Accident Caused by Tire Failure on State Highway 115 in  Comanche County, Oklahoma

Comanche County, Okla. —  A man died after the grain truck he was traveling in experienced tire failure. The accident happened Friday on State Highway 115.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP), James Coopers was driving a grain truck heading southbound when the front driver’s side tire failed, leading to a rollover. The vehicle veered off the road and rolled multiple times before stopping upside down, approximately 150 feet from the roadway.

Cooper was pinned inside the truck for nearly two hours before emergency crews were able to free him.

He later succumbed to his injuries.

The cause of the tire failure must be investigated

This is truly a tragic accident. Tire failure incidents are some of the most frightening because they happen with little to no warning and usually have devastating consequences, as seen here. This is especially true on large commercial vehicles where the driver has little control over what happens following the blowout. Unfortunately, many tire failure accidents are caused by things completely outside the control of the driver.

For instance, a sudden tire failure on a commercial vehicle may be caused by a faulty repair job or a tire that was defective when it left the manufacturer. In that case, the tire manufacturer tried to blame the driver for losing control and the company for improper maintenance. However, after a thorough investigation, we discovered the tire had a manufacturing defect—a tread separation due to poor bonding.

We see cases like this all the time, which is why it is crucial for trained professionals to examine the grain truck’s failed tire. If it is determined that the tire failure happened because of a defect, the manufacturers should be held accountable and should have to answer to the deceased’s surviving family.
