Plant Explosion Attorneys File Lawsuit Against Atmos Energy and Others After Hospital Explodes

The Ammons Law Firm has filed a lawsuit against Atmos Energy Corporation and other companies following a catastrophic natural gas explosion at a hospital in Texas. The explosion caused extensive damage to the hospital and resulted in injuries.

According to the lawsuit, workers were in the final stages of completing an expansion project at the hospital when a massive natural gas explosion occurred in the central utility plant building. This building housed new boilers, chillers, and power systems for the hospital. The State Fire Marshal determined that the explosion was caused by the ignition of a large accumulation of natural gas.

The Ammons Law Firm alleges that the natural gas supplied by Atmos Energy lacked the legally required concentration of odorant, which gives natural gas its distinctive “rotten egg” smell. This odorant is a critical safety feature that allows people to detect gas leaks. Construction workers reportedly did not smell gas prior to the explosion, despite the large volume that must have accumulated.

The lawsuit claims that Atmos Energy was aware of a phenomenon called “odor fade,” where the odorant in natural gas can diminish over time, especially in new pipe installations. However, Atmos allegedly failed to warn the hospital or contractors about this danger. The complaint argues that this failure to warn rendered the natural gas defective and unreasonably dangerous.

In addition to Atmos Energy, the lawsuit names Lochridge-Priest, Inc., All-Tex Pipe & Supply, Inc., and Far East Machinery Co. as defendants. The complaint alleges various causes of action, including strict product liability, negligence, gross negligence, and breach of implied warranties against these companies.

The Ammons Law Firm is seeking compensation for the hospital’s extensive damages, including property damage, repair and rebuild expenses, loss of use damages, lost profits, and other economic losses resulting from the explosion.
