Seven Dead and 37 People Injured in a Bus Tire Accident on Interstate 20 in Bovina, Mississippi

Bovina, Miss. — A commercial bus accident has resulted in the deaths of seven individuals and left numerous others injured. The incident happened Saturday morning on Interstate 20.

According to officials, the bus was traveling westbound near Bovina in Warren County when it veered off the road and flipped over. The National Transportation Safety Board has identified tire failure as the cause of the crash.

Six passengers were pronounced dead at the scene, and a seventh succumbed to their injuries at a nearby hospital. In total, 37 passengers were transported to hospitals in Vicksburg and Jackson for treatment.

No additional details have been released.

The cause of tire failure must be investigated so the innocent victims can receive the help they deserve

There are no words that can capture the emotion that runs through families, friends, and communities when accidents like these happen: it’s simply devastating.

Tire failure incidents need to be thoroughly investigated by trained professionals to understand what went wrong and who should be held accountable. Contrary to popular belief, many major commercial vehicle accidents are not mere coincidences or just bad luck. They are often caused by deliberate choices made by companies long before the accident occurred.

This point is illustrated clearly by a case like this one that we handled several years back. In that case, a tour bus carrying over 50 passengers was outside of Dallas when its front right tire failed. The sudden failure caused a terrible crash that left seventeen people dead and many more injured. During our investigation of the accident, it was found that the failed tire was an illegally mounted retread. This means that the bus company chose to put old tires on the bus instead of new tires, as required by law. Had the company followed the law, the crash never would have happened, and many lives would have been spared.

Like that case, innocent people were killed in this crash and many more were injured. Those impacted deserve answers and justice. They deserve to know why the tire failed and who is ultimately responsible for it. Was the tire defective? Was it not properly maintained? Was it an old tire that never should have been on the road in the first place?  Answers to these questions will require a detailed inspection of the tire and a thorough investigation of the bus company involved.

My hope is for all those affected here to receive the answers and accountability they deserve.
