Abbott Recalls Defective HeartMate Power Units Due to Risk of Serious Injury or Death


A nationwide recall is underway after Abbott announced the removal of certain HeartMate Mobile Power Units (MPUs) used with its HeartMate 3 and HeartMate II Left Ventricular Assist Systems. The FDA has classified the recall as Class I, the most serious type, indicating that continued use of the device could result in serious injury or death.

The recall affects specific MPUs identified by a unique device identifier (UDI-DI: 05415067038234). These devices are being pulled from distribution and use sites following multiple reports of unexpected power loss.

The MPUs serve as an external power source for patients relying on the HeartMate LVAS, which supports heart function in individuals with advanced heart failure.
