Lorraine Chavez Killed, Six People Injured in Box Truck Accident on Interstate 580 in Reno, Nevada

RENO, NV — A weekend crash involving a box truck and multiple vehicles on a Reno freeway has left a Texas woman dead and two critically injured. The incident happened on I-580 near Moana Lane on Saturday morning.

Authorities say a box truck in the number three lane failed to slow for traffic, striking the rear of a Hyundai SUV and triggering a chain-reaction crash involving five vehicles.

The impact caused the Hyundai to overturn. The SUV struck another vehicle, colliding with a Toyota van and a Toyota sedan.

Lorraine Chavez, a 62-year-old from San Antonio, who was seated in the rear of the Hyundai, was transported to a nearby hospital, where she later died. Two juveniles were hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. The Hyundai driver and three others sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The surviving family and the injured deserve answers and justice

Heavy traffic requires the full attention of truckers. Large trucks have no room for error because of their massive size and force: they must drive attentively at all times, maintain a safe distance, and avoid all distractions.

The Large Truck Crash Causation Study (LTCCS) by the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration found that 23 percent of large-truck collisions happen when truck drivers travel too fast for conditions. Failing to adjust speed in heavy traffic leads to crashes like this one.

We recently took on a case involving a devastating truck crash on Interstate 20 in Texas, where a Hino L6 truck failed to slow down and violently rear-ended a family’s vehicle, causing a chain reaction collision. The impact left the victims with severe injuries and lasting trauma.

This tragedy was entirely preventable. The truck driver failed to control their speed and react to stopped traffic, while the trucking company neglected to train their driver and ensure fleet safety properly. Additionally, the company that sold the truck allegedly failed to inform the trucking company about available collision avoidance technology that could have prevented this crash. Now, they are all trying to avoid accountability.

We are fighting to hold all responsible parties accountable for their negligence and to secure justice for the injured family. No one should suffer due to reckless driving and corporate failures to prioritize safety.

I hope the injured and the surviving family in this tragic incident find the answers, support, and justice they deserve.
