Person Killed in a Vehicle Work Accident at Santee Cooper Steam Plant in Georgetown County, South Carolina

GEORGETOWN COUNTY, S.C. — A worker was killed in an accident involving a vehicle at the Santee Cooper steam plant near Georgetown.

Authorities reported that the worker was run over by a truck at the facility located on Pennyroyal Road. Officials confirmed that the worker succumbed to injuries sustained in the incident.

Santee Cooper Safety personnel and the South Carolina Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) have been notified.

Further investigation is needed to answer key questions

Fatal work accidents leave grieving families in shock. They are left picking up the pieces while trying to understand why. Authorities and other professionals should assist the family in finding answers to what went wrong and what can be done about it.

Everything starts with an investigation. In truck accidents that occur at a workplace, three sources often provide the most information: the truck driver, the trucking company, and the facility where the incident occurred. The truck driver is a key witness to the crash and will know what went wrong. The driver may be unwilling to cooperate or may be instructed by his employer or attorneys not to speak about the accident. If this is the case, authorities and professionals have tools for an official statement on what happened.

The trucking company also provides valuable information. The trucking company will know what happened leading up to the crash. Information about the driver’s training, how many hours the driver had driven, dash cam footage of key moments, and data from the truck showing speed, braking, and steering. All this information can be used to paint a complete picture that holds all wrongdoers responsible. This information can also be used to contradict the driver if his statement does not correspond with the facts.

People may want to say that this death was an unavoidable accident. That is not fair. Accidents are preventable. The family deserves answers and justice for any wrongdoing that led to the passing of their loved one.
