FDA Announces Class I Recall of Defective Draeger SafeStar and TwinStar Breathing System Filters Over Patient Injury and Death Risk


Silver Spring, Md. — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has announced a recall of Draeger SafeStar and TwinStar bidirectional breathing system filters following multiple reports of serious injuries.

The filters, used in mechanical ventilation to prevent the spread of bacteria and viruses, are commonly employed during surgical procedures that require anesthesia. A defect in the devices can cause ventilation systems to display inaccurate carbon dioxide readings, prompting healthcare providers to administer unnecessary treatments or compensatory measures. These actions have been linked to patient injuries.

The FDA warns that the defect poses a significant safety risk, including the potential for airway injury or death. The agency has classified the action as a Class I recall, its most serious designation.
