Philips Recalls Defective Respironics V30, A30, and A40 BiPAP Ventilators Due to Serious Injury and Death Reports

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a new safety notice for certain Philips Respironics ventilators after multiple reports of device malfunctions linked to serious injury and death.

The recall affects Philips Respironics V30, A30, and A40 BiPAP ventilators, which may experience system reboots or enter a “Ventilator Inoperative” state. These malfunctions can result in sudden therapy interruption or complete loss of ventilation support, potentially leading to severe health consequences such as respiratory failure, hypoxemia, or death in vulnerable patients.

According to the FDA, the devices may:

  • Reboot unexpectedly for 5 to 10 seconds, temporarily halting therapy and displaying a blank screen with a single audible alert.
  • Restart with either original patient settings or default factory settings after rebooting.
  • Cease therapy entirely and display a ventilator inoperative alarm following repeated reboots or without warning.

The BiPAP V30 Auto is used in medical facilities to support patients with obstructive sleep apnea and respiratory insufficiency, while the A30 and A40 models are designed for both home and clinical use. The A40 model can also provide invasive ventilation and is intended for use in portable settings, such as wheelchairs or gurneys.

To date, there have been 13 reported injuries and 8 confirmed deaths associated with this issue.
