Jonathan Dillard Killed in a Scaffolding Work Accident at Sylvia Mendez Elementary School in Berkeley, California

BERKELEY, Calif. – Authorities have identified the construction worker who died following a workplace incident at a Berkeley elementary school on Thursday. The deceased was 41-year-old Jonathan Guidi of Sacramento.

According to officials, Guidi fell from a scaffolding while working on a renovation project at Sylvia Mendez Elementary School.

Guidi was employed as a subcontractor at the site. Emergency responders transported him to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

No further details are currently available.

Fall accidents should not happen in a safe work environment

When a fatal workplace accident occurs, families are often left searching for answers, asking, “How could this happen?” In many cases, the full picture of what went wrong remains unclear for some time. As investigations unfold, safety failures are frequently revealed to be contributing factors.

Under the General Duty Clause of the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSH Act), employers are required to maintain worksites free from recognized hazards that could cause serious injury or death. This includes organizing worksites safely, equipping workers with proper fall protection, and ensuring thorough safety training.

Were these safety protocols followed at the Berkeley job site? Were the suspension scaffolds properly secured? Were workers protected against falls using guardrails, personal fall-arrest systems, or both? These safeguards are critical in preventing serious accidents.

There are still many unanswered questions surrounding the incident that claimed the life of Mr. Guidi. His family deserves a clear explanation. A thorough investigation by trained professionals can help determine whether the tragedy was preventable—and whether negligence or safety violations played a role. If so, those responsible must be held accountable.
