One Person Killed Following Multi-Vehicle Accident Involving a Disabled Semi-truck on Interstate 205 in Tracy, California

TRACY, CA – A passenger was killed in a three-vehicle crash early Saturday morning on Interstate 205, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash involved two semi-trucks and a Toyota pickup.

According to reports, the Toyota crossed multiple lanes before veering toward the right-hand shoulder, where it struck the rear of a disabled tractor-trailer. The impact caused a passenger in the Toyota to be ejected. The individual was pronounced dead at the scene.

A second semi-truck was also involved in the incident, though its role remains unclear.

Authorities said there is no indication that alcohol or drugs contributed to the crash.

Disabled trucks should not block roadways

While it’s expected to focus on the actions of the Toyota passenger vehicle driver, we also have to ask, what was a disabled semi-truck doing on the shoulder? This is very important to question because the outcome of someone losing their life may have been different if there had not been a parked truck on our roadways.

There is a reason why the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) mandates that commercial trucks only park on the side of the highway in emergencies. Yet, with our decades of experience handling cases like this one, we have found that commercial trucks park on the shoulder for invalid reasons. Even if they stop due to a mechanical failure, this is not acceptable. Many trucking companies skip regular safety inspections due to cost and time constraints, placing other motorists on the road at risk.

Anytime someone dies or sustains life-altering injuries in a truck collision, all factors of what could have prevented the incident have to be examined. This is why it is essential to go beyond the police report and conduct an investigation by trained professionals. If another party shares fault, they should also be held accountable.

The surviving family deserves answers. If any negligence or wrongdoing is discovered, the responsible party should be held accountable.

May the surviving family find the answers they deserve.
