Tabletop Fire Pit Explosion Accident Leaves One Person Seriously Burned and Injured in Avon, Massachusetts

AVON, Mass. — A tabletop fire pit fueled by isopropyl alcohol exploded inside an Avon home on Thursday, leaving a resident with third-degree burns to their arm, hand, and abdomen.

The Avon Fire Department stated that emergency crews responded after the device suddenly ignited, causing the explosion. Officials warned that isopropyl alcohol-fueled tabletop fire pits are dangerous and should not be used indoors.

“These products have been linked to numerous injuries and deaths across the country,” the department said in a statement.

No additional information has been provided.

Dangerous tabletop fire pits have no room in our homes

We all love decorating our homes. We look for cute décor that complements our house, and it’s always a win when we find a piece that not only looks good in our living rooms or hallways but is also functional. Tabletop fire pits fit that description: compact, attractive, and easy to use, offering comfort and warmth. These products are often sold as fire pots, portable fireplaces, or miniature indoor fire pits. But appearances can be misleading, and in this case, they can also be dangerous as these products pose significant burn and fire risks.

Tabletop fire pits are highly hazardous. They can turn any average day or cozy night into a nightmare, exploding and causing severe, life-altering burn injuries to everyone in their proximity. Yet these indoor fire kits continue to be sold, marketed to unsuspecting consumers looking for cute décor and compact warmth.

The main hazard lies in a common design flaw: users are instructed to pour flammable liquids, such as isopropyl alcohol, directly into an open reservoir and ignite them in the same space, where flame jetting and uncontrolled flare-ups can occur. Flame jetting can occur if a small, nearly invisible flame remains during refueling, igniting vapors and causing a sudden, violent burst of fire. These devices can burn at temperatures exceeding 1,600°F, leaving little time to react when something goes wrong.

Consumers have the right to know the dangers associated with these products. People who have been seriously burned by these products deserve answers, justice, and compensation for their life-altering injuries.

I hope the Avon resident here recovers fully and gets the justice and compensation they deserve.
