Zac Rinehart Killed and One Other Injured After Being Struck by a Semi-truck in a Work Accident Along Interstate 44 Near Miami, Oklahoma

OTTAWA COUNTY, Okla. — An Oklahoma Turnpike Authority (OTA) worker was killed and another OTA worker critically injured when a semi-truck crashed into a work zone. The incident happened along Interstate 44 near Miami on Friday afternoon.

According to reports, two OTA employees were collecting trash along the eastbound lanes. One worker was outside the vehicle on foot while the other remained inside a truck. Authorities state that the semi left the roadway, striking the worker on foot before colliding with the parked truck.

The worker killed was identified as Zac Rinehart, a Heavy Equipment Operator II. The second worker was transported to a hospital and remains in critical condition.

All those impacted by this crash deserve justice and compensation from the trucking company for the loss of their loved one

A life cut short so senselessly, and all while trying to make a living and making sure our roads are safe. This young man lost his life without warning when a semi-truck driver struck him, and in seconds, his future was stripped away from him, leaving behind a family.

A second worker has a long road to recovery from possible life-altering injuries. All because of this preventable crash. Why was this truck driver behind the wheel?

The trucking company’s records could provide revealing information. Investigating their hiring standards, safety practices, and the driver’s history might reveal whether necessary precautions were overlooked. Did the driver have prior violations? Were they adequately trained in work zone safety? Data from the truck’s recorder will show its speed and braking actions, while dashcam footage may expose distractions or other contributing factors.

Often, incidents like this aren’t isolated to a single moment of negligence. They can expose systemic issues within a company—such as prioritizing profits over safety. Some trucking firms pressure drivers with tight schedules, ignore signs of fatigue, or fail to enforce essential safety protocols.

Mr. Rinehart’s surviving family, along with the injured and their family, deserve answers and justice for what they have been forced to deal with: the loss of their loved one and life-altering injuries.

May all that went wrong come to light.
