Fidel Solis Mendoza Killed in a Tire Blowout Rollover Accident on Interstate 20 in Midland County, Texas

MIDLAND COUNTY, Texas — The Texas Department of Public Safety reported a fatal rollover crash Thursday morning on Interstate 20 that left one person dead.

According to reports, a 2023 Chevrolet Malibu traveling east experienced a blowout on the left rear tire, causing the driver to lose control. The vehicle rolled multiple times before coming to a stop.

The driver, identified as 30-year-old Fidel Solis Mendoza, died at the scene.

Tire Blowouts Raise Serious Safety Concerns

Tire blowouts happen suddenly and without warning, and the outcome can be catastrophic, as seen here, where one person lost their life in an instant.

Most people assume tire blowouts happen because of bad luck or poor maintenance. They rarely consider that a blowout can occur because the tire was defective from the beginning, but it happens, and when it does, the driver is not at fault.

Defective tires have a design or construction defect originating with the manufacturer. The responsibility lies with the manufacturer who allowed a dangerous product on the road.

We recently handled a similar case in New Mexico involving a catastrophic rollover caused by a defective tire. A newly installed tire experienced sudden tread separation on the interstate, causing the driver to lose control. The result was a devastating crash.

This tragedy should never have happened. The manufacturer sold a defective tire prone to tread separation because it failed to use proper materials and safety practices. The tire shop then installed and sold that same tire without performing a thorough inspection. Now, both are attempting to avoid responsibility.

We are fighting to hold both the manufacturer and the tire shop accountable for their negligence and to seek justice for the passenger. No one should have to suffer life-altering injuries or lose their life due to unsafe products and negligent business practices.

The family of Mr. Mendoza also deserves answers. A thorough investigation beyond the police report can reveal the cause of the tire blowout in this incident. If defects are suspected and confirmed, those responsible should be held accountable.

Our thoughts are with Mr. Mendoza’s family: may they find the answers they deserve.
