Benjamin Caballero De Anda Killed in a Head-On Accident with a Dump Truck in the 2500 block of N. Ascencion Street in Horizon City, Texas

HORIZON CITY, Texas — A 34-year-old Horizon man died after a head-on collision with a dump truck on a rain-soaked Far East El Paso County roadway Thursday.

Authorities said Benjamin Caballero De Anda was driving a Chevrolet pickup when a northbound Freightliner dump truck reportedly lost control on wet pavement. Investigators believe the truck skidded across the center line into oncoming traffic and struck De Anda’s vehicle head-on.

The crash happened in the 2500 block of N. Ascencion Street near East Montana Middle School. De Anda was taken to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Fatal head-on truck collisions in wet conditions: A call for answers and accountability

Head-on collisions can happen in an instant. One moment of lost control is all it takes for a crash this severe to unfold. Rain-soaked roads make these moments even more unforgiving. Slick pavement reduces traction, stretches out stopping distance, and can send a vehicle, especially a heavy truck, across the roadway into the lane of a driver who has no time to react. Truck drivers know this and, by law, must exercise extreme caution and avoid driving altogether if they cannot drive safely. Given the fatal consequences of this crash, this truck driver clearly broke this rule.

So what exactly went wrong here?  How did this happen? The family of Mr. Caballero De Anda deserves answers.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a heavy truck lose control in the rain with fatal consequences. We recently handled a devastating case involving a tractor-trailer. While driving in rainy conditions, the truck driver was allegedly speeding, lost control, hydroplaned across the median, and collided head-on with another vehicle.

This tragedy was entirely preventable. The trucking company failed to train and supervise the driver properly and neglected to enforce basic safety protocols for operating in hazardous weather. But even with all these failures, the company attempted to avoid responsibility.

We fought. We fought to hold the trucking company accountable for its gross negligence. We fought to seek justice for the impacted family. And we fought to make sure the truth about what happened could no longer be ignored. No one should have to suffer serious injury or death due to a trucking company’s failure to prioritize safety on the road. Families and survivors deserve more than runarounds, deflection, and quick settlements that fail to reflect the true extent of their loss and suffering.

The surviving family of  Mr. Caballero De Anda here deserves the same justice. They deserve to demand answers and hold those responsible accountable. May they find the strength and support they need to move forward.
