Traffic Incident Responder Killed, Another Injured in Accident Involving a Semi-Truck on Interstate 95 in Mims, Florida

MIMS, Florida —  A traffic incident responder was killed on Monday, and his passenger was injured after a semi-truck struck their arrow board vehicle along Interstate 95.

Officials said two traffic incident responders were inside a truck equipped with an arrow board designed to warn approaching drivers and direct traffic away from an active work area. The vehicle was positioned in the right lane with cones and electronic message boards alerting motorists to a crash ahead.

Troopers said the semi-truck struck the rear of the arrow board vehicle, which was positioned in the right lane as part of a traffic incident response. The impact pushed the arrow board truck forward along the guardrail.

One of the responders died at the scene. The second responder, a 42-year-old passenger, was airlifted to a hospital for treatment. Their condition has not been released.

Authorities said the work zone was clearly marked with cones, lights, and warning devices at the time of the collision.

Semi-Truck Crash That Killed Traffic Worker Raises Questions About Driver Awareness and Accountability

These two workers were in place to protect motorists and manage traffic safely. Cones, lights, and an arrow board were deployed within the traffic control zone. Even with these measures in place, tragedy struck. How did this happen?

At this stage, many critical questions remain unanswered. Why did the semi-truck collide with a clearly marked arrow board vehicle? Were there visibility issues, distractions, fatigue, or mechanical problems involved? Was the driver traveling at an appropriate speed for the conditions? Only a full investigation can determine what went wrong.

In our work handling serious truck crash cases nationwide, we have seen that incidents like this often stem from preventable failures. Many of these issues only become clear after records are carefully examined, including driver logs, vehicle data, maintenance histories, and company safety practices.

Looking closely at the evidence can help answer whether the truck driver saw the warning signs and whether distraction, fatigue, or speed played a role in their ability to slow down or stop. Skid marks, dash-camera video, and truck data may help explain why this crash happened.

The family of the worker who was killed, along with the injured responder, deserves answers and accountability. The facts of what happened should come to light.
