Benjamin Ziomek Injured in Rollover Accident on Interstate 90 in Winona County, Minnesota

WINONA COUNTY, Minn. — A Rochester man was taken to the hospital Friday evening after his SUV rolled into the median along Interstate 90, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

The eastbound SUV veered left, entered the median, and overturned before coming to rest in the westbound left lane. Snow and ice were reported on the roadway at the time of the incident.

The driver, identified as 34-year-old Benjamin Ziomek, was the sole occupant. He was transported by ambulance to St. Marys Hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Authorities noted that he was wearing a seatbelt and that alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

Vehicles need to protect occupants in rollover crashes

The season of ice, snow, and strong winds is here, and with it comes a rise in SUV rollover crashes. It only takes a small patch of ice on the road for a rollover to happen. These vehicles are more vulnerable in winter conditions because their higher center of gravity makes them more likely to tip or overturn when traction is lost.

Manufacturers understand this vulnerability better than anyone. That’s why they have a legal responsibility to design SUVs that can withstand rollovers and protect occupants from further injury. Unfortunately, that responsibility isn’t always met.

Many SUV models have a history of failing to withstand rollovers, leaving occupants at greater risk of serious injury. Common failures include seatbelts that do not restrain occupants, airbags that fail to deploy, and roofs that collapse—potentially crushing the people inside and causing severe spinal or head injuries.

When a vehicle is defective and causes serious injuries, manufacturers should be held accountable.

While we do not yet have full details about this incident, the injuries involved, or the SUV in question, we do know that many of these vehicles have a history of failing to provide adequate protection in rollover crashes. A thorough investigation by legal professionals experienced in manufacturing defect cases can help determine whether the vehicle in question was defective and, if so, what steps should be taken next.

Drivers are expected to be careful on the road.Ā  But manufacturers are expected to build vehicles that keep people safe. When they fail to do so, they should be held accountable.

I hope Mr. Ziomek makes a full and fast recovery and finds the answers he deserves.
