Tyler McGurl Killed in Interstate 44 Accident After Semi-Truck Strikes Disabled Vehicle in Lincoln County, Oklahoma

LINCOLN COUNTY, Okla. — A 37-year-old Oklahoma City man was killed early Thursday morning after a semi-truck struck his vehicle, which was stopped along Interstate 44 in Lincoln County.

According to authorities, the man’s car became disabled after running out of fuel in the eastbound lanes near the Warwick area. After pulling over to the outside lane, the driver contacted authorities for assistance.

While the vehicle was stopped, an eastbound semi-trailer struck the rear of the disabled vehicle, sending it into an embankment.

The driver, identified as Tyler McGurl, died as a result of the collision.

Seeking Answers After a Semi-Truck Hits a Driver in an Emergency

What a tragedy. A driver experienced an emergency when their vehicle became disabled on the roadway, a situation that can happen to anyone. When a vehicle is no longer operable, drivers are often forced to make split-second decisions to protect their own safety.

Here, the driver did what many of us would do in the exact moment: get out of the way of traffic and call for help. So what went wrong?

Semi-truck drivers have a duty to maintain control, keep a proper lookout, and adjust their speed to roadway conditions. Commercial drivers must anticipate hazards and be prepared to avoid a stopped vehicle. That duty does not lessen during the overnight or early-morning hours; it becomes even more important.

The key question now is simple: Was the truck driver keeping the lookout required to maintain an assured clear distance ahead?

A full investigation can determine what the truck driver saw, when they saw it, and whether they had enough time to react. Evidence such as skid marks, lighting conditions, dash-cam footage, and data from the truck’s onboard systems can help determine whether this collision was avoidable and where responsibility lies.

When a driver is struck while dealing with an emergency, the family left behind deserves clear answers. They deserve to know whether this crash could have been prevented and whether the truck driver met the basic safety duties required of every commercial operator on the road.

We hope that Mr. McGurl’s family finds the answers they need.
