BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. — A woman died, and another person was seriously injured following a collision between an SUV and a commercial truck on Florida’s Turnpike on Friday morning.
According to reports, a 2021 Mercedes-Benz SUV was stopped in the center lane when it was struck from behind by a 2015 FedEx Freightliner tractor pulling dual trailers.
The impact pushed the SUV southeastward, causing it to hit a concrete median wall.
A 36-year-old Miami woman riding in the SUV died at the scene. The driver, a man, sustained serious injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
When Corporate Truck Drivers Fail to Keep Their Distance, Others Pay the Price: Accountability Cannot Wait
The golden rule of driving is simple: maintain a distance from the vehicle in front of you. Extra following distance gives drivers the space needed to respond safely to sudden changes in traffic. Yet in this crash, a stopped SUV was struck from behind by a tractor-trailer that failed to slow or adjust, setting off a sequence of impacts that ended in tragedy. How does something so basic go so wrong?
We have handled hundreds of cases like this, and the causes we uncover are often the same—speeding, distraction, impairment, or mechanical failure. These are preventable issues that should never endanger people sharing the road.
In one recent Texas case, a passenger vehicle was moving slowly because of a flat tire when a truck hauling freight for several logistics companies failed to reduce speed. The truck struck the car from behind, killing three innocent people, including children.
This loss was entirely preventable. The truck driver failed to recognize and respond to a disabled vehicle moving at a reduced speed, and the companies responsible for hiring and supervising him failed to ensure he was trained, monitored, and following even the most basic safety protocols.
We worked to hold both the driver and the trucking companies accountable for their negligence and to secure justice for the victims and their families. No family should have to endure such a devastating loss caused by careless driving and poor oversight.
The family of the deceased woman and the injured also deserve answers. They deserve justice. They deserve the opportunity to hold those responsible accountable.
In cases like this, large corporate carriers often move quickly to limit their responsibility. Their legal teams may also try to shift blame elsewhere. But they should not be allowed to avoid accountability when their systems, policies, or drivers contribute to a fatal outcome.
Seasoned truck attorneys with experience handling cases like this can help families understand what led to a serious crash, preserve critical evidence, and push back when large companies attempt to deflect responsibility. In tragedies like this, having someone who knows how to uncover the whole truth is important.
May the surviving family and the injured find the support they need.
