Brandon Gipson Killed After Struck by Vehicle Near Bellingham, Washington

Whatcom County, Wash. — A construction worker was killed after being struck by a construction vehicle on a job site near Bellingham, according to the Washington State Patrol (WSP). The incident happened on Tuesday morning.

Authorities reported that a construction vehicle was reversing along the right shoulder of the eastbound lane when it struck a worker walking westbound on the same shoulder.

The victim, identified as 42-year-old Brandon Gipson of Ferndale, was pronounced dead at the scene.

No additional details were released.

Investigation Needs to Take Place to Why a Vehicle Struck a Man, Fatally Injuring Him

While initial reports may focus on the vehicle operator, our experience investigating similar heartbreaking incidents reveals that construction site accidents often stem from preventable safety failures that run far deeper.

Site supervisors hold the crucial responsibility of protecting workers’ lives. They must carefully orchestrate the movement of workers and heavy machinery, ensuring vehicles have designated paths and workers on foot remain in protected zones. This includes maintaining working backup alarms and positioning spotters whenever heavy equipment is in motion. Those in management positions bear equal responsibility to provide thorough training and enforce unwavering safety standards.

The surviving family deserves more than surface-level explanations about their devastating loss. They need to understand why the safety measures meant to protect their loved one failed that day. A thorough investigation must examine how safety protocols were managed, whether proper training was provided, and if established safety rules were consistently enforced. When supervisors evade responsibility for worker safety, dangerous practices persist, putting more families at risk of enduring similar heartbreak.

Only by holding all responsible parties accountable can we honor the memory of the deceased and help ensure other families are spared such profound loss. The path to justice demands uncovering the complete truth, however difficult that truth may be to face. The surviving family deserves nothing less than a comprehensive investigation that reveals how this tragedy could have been prevented.
