Ford Ordered to Pay $2.5 Billion in Super Duty Roof Collapse Lawsuit

A Georgia jury has awarded $2.5 billion in damages against Ford Motor Co. in a wrongful death lawsuit involving a fatal rollover crash, alleging the automaker failed to address structural weaknesses in the roofs of its Super Duty trucks.

The case arose from an August 2022 crash in which 64-year-old Debra Mills lost control of her 2015 Ford F-250 Super Crew 4×4 King Ranch while making a right-hand turn. The vehicle veered off the road, struck a drainage culvert, and overturned, landing on its roof. Mills and her husband, 74-year-old Herman Mills, were both killed in the crash.

Attorneys for the Mills family argued that Ford was aware of roof weaknesses in Super Duty trucks from 1999 to 2016 but failed to take corrective action. Court filings state that more than 5 million of these vehicles contain what attorneys described as dangerously weak roof structures.

The ruling follows a previous Georgia case in which a jury awarded $1.7 billion in a similar lawsuit involving a Ford Super Duty truck rollover. That verdict was later overturned on appeal, and a new trial was ordered.

Despite these legal challenges, federal safety regulators, including the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), have not issued any recalls or identified safety defects in the affected Ford truck roofs.

The Mills case was heard in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Georgia (Columbus Division).

Ford has a history of producing vehicles with weak roof structures

This tragic incident is not an isolated case. Every year, far too many lives are lost due to preventable vehicle defects, leaving families devastated and searching for answers. Our firm has seen this pattern repeatedly, handling numerous cases where manufacturers ignored known safety risks. Time and again, we have fought for victims of these tragedies, exposing corporate negligence and demanding accountability.

We are fighting to hold Ford accountable for its negligence and to seek justice for grieving families. No one should lose their life due to a manufacturer’s failure to ensure basic vehicle safety.
