Mentor Man Killed in an Accident with a Disabled Semi-truck on Interstate 480 in North Ridgeville, Ohio

North Ridgeville, Ohio — A 28-year-old man from Mentor was fatally injured in a crash Wednesday morning on I-480 westbound near the east city limits of North Ridgeville.

According to police, the crash occurred when the driver veered off the right side of the highway and collided with a disabled semi.

The victim, whose identity has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene.

No additional details are currently available.

Highway shoulders are no place for disabled commercial trucks

Accident reports often say a driver who hits a parked or disabled semi-truck is at fault. However, my experience has shown that these cases deserve deeper investigation to determine if the truck should have been on the side of the road in the first place.

I recently handled a case involving a young husband and father who crashed into the back of a semi-truck parked near a moving lane of traffic, much like what occurred here. The truck had a flat tire, and the driver claimed he had no choice but to pull over. However, our investigation revealed that the tire had been underinflated for an extended period. Instead of replacing the tire, the trucking company repeatedly inflated it to avoid downtime. This shows that what appeared to be a reasonable decision to pull over was a deliberate choice to prioritize profits over safety. This tragic decision cost a man his life and left a child without a father. Unfortunately, we are seeing more and more cases like this each year.

Trucking companies must adhere to safety standards and cannot expect to avoid liability when they fail to do so. If they neglect their responsibilities and cause harm, they can and should be held accountable.

While money cannot bring a loved one back, it is the law’s way of acknowledging wrongdoing and the pain and suffering faced daily by those left behind.
