FDA Announces Medtronic Recall of Brain Fluid Drainage Systems Due to Injury Risks

February 5, 2025 — Medtronic has issued a recall for its Becker and Exacta external drainage and monitoring systems, used to drain cerebrospinal fluid from the brain, following reports of potential cracks and leaks. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classified the recall as Class I, its most serious category, citing the risk of serious injury or death.

The recall follows 15 reported injuries linked to the devices, which are used to monitor and manage brain fluid pressure. Cracks in the device stopcocks or connections could result in fluid leaks, potentially leading to infection or other severe complications.

Although Medtronic is keeping the devices on the market, the company has advised healthcare providers to carefully inspect the stopcocks and connections for visible cracks before use. Providers should return any defective devices to Medtronic for replacement.

In a letter sent to customers in November, Medtronic acknowledged receiving complaints about cracks in various parts of the drainage system depending on its configuration. The FDA reported that no patient deaths have been linked to the issue, though Medtronic noted three cases involving patient infections.

Healthcare providers are urged to monitor patients for signs of infection and other complications. If cracks or leaks are detected during use, Medtronic recommends immediate replacement of the device under sterile conditions.

To reduce the likelihood of device failures, Medtronic and the FDA have emphasized the importance of ensuring that all connections are securely finger-tightened without overtightening, which can cause cracks.

For more information or to report issues with the devices, healthcare providers are encouraged to contact Medtronic or consult the FDA’s recall notice for further guidance.
