Samsung SDI Recalls Over 180,000 Plug-In Hybrid Batteries for Potential Fire Risk

Samsung SDI has issued a recall for up to 180,196 battery packs due to internal cell failures that could lead to power loss and an increased risk of fire, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The affected battery cells were manufactured between July 1, 2020, and March 28, 2023, and were supplied to Ford, FCA, and Audi for use in plug-in hybrid vehicles. These. These vehicles were part of prior battery recalls last fall.

Vehicles Affected:

  • Jeep (155,096 vehicles)
    • 2020-2024 Wrangler
    • 2020-2024 Grand Cherokee
  • Ford (20,484 vehicles)
    • 2020-2024 Escape
    • 2021-2024 Lincoln Corsair SUV
  • Audi (4,616 vehicles)
    • 2022-2023 Q5
    • 2022 A7

Only about 1% of the recalled vehicles are estimated to have defective batteries.

Ford investigators found that the high-voltage battery cell separator may be vulnerable to damage during manufacturing, potentially leading to an internal short circuit. If a short occurs, affected vehicles may display a “stop safely now” message in the instrument cluster.

FCA US confirmed that some Samsung SDI battery packs contain cells with damaged separators but noted that additional complex interactions within the cells may, in rare cases, cause a fire.

Volkswagen, Audi’s parent company, determined that the battery cells could experience thermal overload, which may lead to smoke or fire.
