Walmart Recalls SG-5 Swagger 5 Boost Electric Scooters Over Fire Hazard

Springfield, Mo.– Walmart has issued a recall for SG-5 Swagger 5 Boost Commuter electric scooters due to a fire risk associated with their lithium-ion batteries. The recall affects scooters sold at Walmart and Sam’s Club locations nationwide, as well as online at Walmart.com and SamsClub.com, between May 2018 and October 2024.

The affected scooters can be identified by “SWAGGER 5” markings on the handlebars and specific model numbers displayed on the scooter deck, including

  • SWGR5-V2-SLV
  • SWGR5-V2-2, SG5
  • Boost, SG-5S
  • 96262-2, 96262-9, and 96560-2

The recall follows reports of at least seven incidents involving the batteries overheating, smoking, melting, or igniting. One of these incidents resulted in a fire that caused injuries and significant damage to a residential apartment building.

Consumers are advised to stop using and charging the scooters immediately. To properly dispose of the product, users should cut the throttle cord and follow local and state hazardous waste disposal procedures. Customers who purchased the scooters from Walmart or Sam’s Club will receive an email with instructions for a full refund.

For safety, recalled lithium-ion batteries must not be discarded in regular trash or standard battery recycling bins. Consumers should follow municipal guidelines for handling damaged or defective lithium batteries.
