Medical King Recalls 222,000 Adult Bed Rails Following Reported Fatality

Medical King has issued a recall for approximately 222,000 adult portable bed assistance rails due to serious safety risks, including entrapment and asphyxiation. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall after one reported death involving the product.

The recall affects three models of Medical King bed rails: the “Bed Assist Rail with Adjustable Heights” (model numbers 7007 and 7057) and the “Bed Assist Rail Without Legs” (model number 7037). These products were sold online from January 2020 to March 2024 through Amazon, Walmart, and eBay platforms. They do not bear specific brand markings, making identification dependent on purchase records or receipts.

The reported fatality involved a 66-year-old man who became trapped between his mattress and the bed rail in a South Carolina residential care facility in November 2023. This incident prompted Medical King to urge consumers to immediately stop using the recalled products and contact the company for a free repair kit or replacement, depending on the model.

Medical King’s recall is part of a larger pattern of safety concerns related to adult portable bed rails. Since 2021, the CPSC has issued nine recalls and two warnings linked to bed rails, with these products associated with 18 fatalities and numerous injuries. Earlier in 2024, Medline recalled 1.5 million bed rails following two reported deaths due to entrapment.
