Academy Sports Recalls Redfield 12- and 18-Gun Fireproof Safes Due to Risk of Injuries and Deaths


Katy, TX — Academy Sports has issued a recall of approximately 6,100 Redfield 12-gun and 18-gun Fireproof Safes due to a defect in the locking mechanism that could allow unauthorized access. This poses a significant risk of serious injury or death if firearms stored in the safes are accessed improperly.

The internal mechanical locking plates in the safes may fail to align properly, potentially allowing unauthorized users to open the safes without the proper code. This defect creates a safety concern by allowing firearms stored inside to be accessed by individuals not authorized to do so.

The recall involves two models of Redfield Fireproof Safes sold exclusively by Academy Sports:

  • 12-Gun Fireproof Safe (Model Number: 179498)
  • 18-Gun Fireproof Safe (Model Number: 179499)

Consumers are advised to immediately stop using the safes and return them to any Academy Sports location. Customers have the option of receiving a free replacement or a full refund.
