Estanislao Jaimes, Diana Lopez, Maria Pineda, Jose Rodriguez, Pedro Urquiza Killed and Seven People Injured in a Multi-Vehicle Accident Involving a Semi-truck on U.S. Highway 57 in Zavala County, Texas

Zavala County, Texas – A multi-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 57 near the Nueces River Bridge has claimed the lives of five individuals and left seven others injured. Authorities believe icy road conditions played a significant role in the accident.

The incident occurred early Tuesday morning when a series of collisions began involving two Ford vans towing trailers and a Ford F-150 pickup truck. The situation escalated when a Freightliner tractor-truck collided with all three vehicles.

DPS reports that the accident began when one of the Ford vans lost control and collided with another van towing a trailer. The Ford F-150 stopped on the bridge due to the initial collision.

Several passengers reportedly attempted to warn the Freightliner truck driver about the icy bridge, but the truck was unable to stop in time, resulting in the devastating crash.

Among the deceased were Pedro Urquiza, 63, Estanislao Jaimes, 60, and Diana Lopez, 43, inside one of the Ford vans. Jose Artemio Rodriguez, 48, the driver of the Ford F-150, was found deceased beneath the bridge. Maria Pineda, 60, who was driving the second Ford van, also succumbed to her injuries following the crash.

Seven passengers from the vehicles were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of their injuries.

The truck driver needs to be held accountable

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), commercial trucks should stop operating if conditions are too dangerous. Specifically, the FMCSA advises drivers to immediately discontinue operations if conditions prevent safe driving due to adverse weather conditions. Drivers are also instructed to reduce speed and prepare for longer stopping distances.

It seems clear that these rules were not followed here, and as a result, multiple people were injured and killed. It is only right for those affected to receive answers and justice for their immeasurable pain and loss. May they find the support they need.
