Fareda Gallagher Seriously Injured in Rollover Accident in Lyon County, Kansas

Lyon County—A single-vehicle rollover crash near Emporia left a woman seriously injured on Saturday afternoon.

According to the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, 64-year-old Fareda Gallagher was driving westbound on the 2000 block of Road 175 when her vehicle lost control on the icy surface. The vehicle spun, rolled, and came to rest in a south ditch near the intersection with Road X.

Emergency responders extracted Gallagher from the vehicle and transported her to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Did the vehicle protect the passengers from serious injury?

Shouldn’t our cars be able to protect us from serious injury in a rollover crash? There is no question that the technology to protect us from serious injury in a rollover crash has been available for decades. I see cases all the time of people involved in serious rollover crashes who walk away with a few scrapes and bruises. I see others who are left dead or seriously injured. It is a tragedy that the difference between these outcomes often comes down to the vehicle the person was driving.

At the end of the day, every manufacturer should be required to build a vehicle that protects its customers from serious injury. Unfortunately, we see defective vehicles every day that fail to do this.

Critical safety components like seatbelts and airbags must function as designed during a rollover. Seatbelts should restrain and airbags should deploy. And of course, the roof must maintain its shape to avoid crushing the occupants. When these systems fail, the vehicle is defective, and people suffer serious injuries.

For those injured here and in similar crashes, finding out whether their vehicle was defective is important. Sustaining serious injuries due to someone else’s negligence or failure to uphold legal safety standards is unacceptable.

Manufacturers that produce defective vehicles should be held accountable and be required to compensate the injured for their injuries.
