FDA Recalls Nationwide Blood Pressure Drug Over Potentially Fatal Contaminant


The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced the recall of an injectable blood pressure medication, phenylephrine hydrochloride, due to visible black particulate matter discovered in a sealed vial. The drug, manufactured by Provepharm, Inc. of Pennsylvania, treats low blood pressure following anesthesia.

According to the FDA, administering medication contaminated with particulate matter can cause localized irritation or swelling. If the particles enter the bloodstream, they may block blood vessels in critical organs such as the heart, lungs, or brain, potentially leading to stroke or death.

The affected product, distributed nationwide, is packaged in 10 mL single-dose vials with the NDC code 81284-213-01, lot number 24020027, and an expiration date of December 2025.

The company is notifying distributors and customers and coordinating the return of the recalled product through Sedgwick, its recall provider.

Healthcare providers, compounding companies, and wholesalers are instructed to immediately stop using the product and return it as directed.
