Greg Sanchez Killed in an Accident Involving a Semi-truck and a Sandstorm on U.S. 285 in Reeves County, Texas

Reeves County, TX — A sandstorm with severely reduced visibility on U.S. 285 in Reeves County resulted in a series of crashes, including one that claimed the life of a 41-year-old Monahans man.

Authorities reported that Greg Edward Sanchez was driving a Toyota Tundra when he collided with the rear of a tractor-trailer. The fatal crash occurred Friday afternoon during the sandstorm.

Commercial Trucks Have a Responsibility to Operate Only Under Safe Conditions

The news release states that road conditions were dangerous due to a sandstorm severely reducing visibility. This raises concerns: Should the semi-trucks have been on the road in the first place?

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), commercial trucks should stop operating if conditions are too dangerous. Specifically, the FMCSA advises drivers to immediately discontinue operations if conditions prevent safe driving due to adverse weather conditions.

Given the dangers of driving without visibility, it seems that this event is one where trucks should not have been on the road. It goes without saying that had the truck not been on the road, this accident would not have occurred. Further investigating the truck driver and company’s decisions leading up to the accident will be very important. Did the trucker have an opportunity to pull over but decided to keep going? Did the company force the driver to keep going to stay on schedule? What happened in the minutes or hours leading up to the crash is important.

A family lost their husband and father. They deserve to know if the truck driver should not have been on the road in the first place. They deserve help for what was taken from them. May they receive the help and answers they seek.
