Two Killed and Dozens Injured After Alcohol and Liquid-Burning Fire Pits

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a critical safety alert urging consumers to immediately stop using fire pits designed to burn alcohol or other liquid fuels. Often marketed as tabletop fire pits, fire pots, miniature fireplaces, or portable indoor fires, these products pose severe fire and burn hazards.

CPSC warns that these products have been linked to two deaths and at least 60 serious burn injuries since 2019. The Commission also calls on retailers and online sellers to halt the sale of these hazardous items.

These fire pits require users to pour isopropyl alcohol, ethanol, or similar liquid fuel into an open container or bowl and ignite it in the same location. These designs violate the voluntary safety standard ASTM F3363-19, intended to prevent pool fires and flame jetting incidents.

  • Pool Fires: Igniting liquid fuel in an open container creates an uncontrollable pool fire, producing intense flames that can spread dangerously beyond the product.
  • Flame Jetting: A secondary hazard occurs when refueling fire pits that may still have small, hard-to-see flames. Pouring liquid fuel near an active flame can result in a sudden explosion, launching flames and burning fuel onto users or bystanders.

Flames from these fuels burn at temperatures exceeding 1,600°F, causing third-degree burns in under a second. Consumers are encouraged to stop using the devices immediately. Retailers were told to cease the sale of these products.
