Jennifer James Killed Six Others Injured in Multi-Vehicle Accident Involving Semi-trucks on Interstate 35 in Hewitt, Texas

Hewitt, Texas — A fiery collision involving three semi-trucks and six passenger vehicles claimed the life of Jennifer James, 39, of Lorena. The incident happened on I-35 on Wednesday morning as traffic slowed for a road crew.

Authorities report that a semi-truck failed to control its speed, triggering a chain-reaction collision involving multiple vehicles.

James was pronounced dead at the scene, and six other individuals were transported to Baylor Scott and White in Waco for treatment.

The surviving family and the injured in this crash need answers and accountability

It’s deeply troubling to learn that one person’s life was cut short and six individuals suffered injuries because another driver failed to observe basic road rules and adjust their driving behavior accordingly.

The faster a truck is moving, the longer it takes to come to a complete stop. This is why the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) advises trucks to allow a minimum of one second for every 10 feet of vehicle length when driving at speeds below 40 miles per hour. For speeds exceeding 40 miles per hour, they should add an additional second.

Maintaining safe speeds is essential for preventing accidents and ensuring road safety. Commercial truck drivers, held to a higher standard due to the size and risk of their vehicles, must be held accountable for their actions when they violate these rules. While holding the party responsible accountable cannot erase the pain, it serves as the legal system’s way of acknowledging the family’s loss and the lasting impact this accident has had on their lives and on those who were injured.

I hope those affected by this tragedy find the justice, understanding, and peace they need during this challenging time.
