The incident occurred at Enerfin Resources Company’s pipeline facility, where a worker allegedly suffered extensive burns covering most of their body.
According to the lawsuit, the explosion allegedly resulted from multiple failures across the three companies. Enerfin Resources Company allegedly failed to implement adequate safety measures during routine pipeline operations. The lawsuit claims that Enerfin Resources was allegedly engaged in ultrahazardous activity and failed to remedy unsafe working conditions despite being aware of the risks.
Wichita Tank Mfg., Inc. manufactured the tank involved in the incident. The lawsuit alleges that the tank had design defects that made it prone to vapor leaks and lacked proper warnings about its limitations. According to court documents, the tank allegedly allowed explosive vapors to escape through insufficient seals, creating hazardous conditions in work areas.
Sonny’s Tank Trucks, Inc., which leased the tank to Enerfin, allegedly failed to properly inspect and maintain the equipment. The lawsuit alleges that Sonny’s Tank Trucks knew or should have known about a corroded fitting that allegedly contributed to the vapor release. The company allegedly failed to warn about the tank’s unsuitability for certain operations.
The incident occurred during normal operations when hydrocarbon vapors were released and ignited, causing a massive explosion. The force of the blast was reportedly so intense that nearby residents felt their homes shake. The explosion created a fire that scorched a large section of the surrounding area.
