Man Killed in Accident Involving Semi-Truck on US-131 in Grand Rapids, Michigan

Grand Rapids, MI — A 54-year-old Grand Rapids man lost his life in a crash involving a semi-truck on northbound US-131, Michigan State Police reported.

Authorities say the man was driving ahead of the semi when he began to lose control of his vehicle. As the truck driver attempted to brake, the semi slid into the guardrail and jackknifed, leading to a collision between the two vehicles.

Emergency crews pronounced the car’s driver dead at the scene.

No further information has been released.

The family of the deceased deserves answers

One of the golden rules in the trucking world is for truckers to maintain a safe following distance from the vehicle in front of them. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) states that for speeds over 40 mph, truckers should leave at least 5 seconds between them and the vehicle in front. Did that happen here? Was the trucker maintaining a safe distance, allowing for faster reaction times in case of a sudden stop?

Truck drivers need to keep enough distance to respond to emergencies. Unfortunately, based on the news report, the trucking company and driver will probably try to avoid liability by saying the incident was unavoidable. However, as mentioned above, commercial drivers need to take precautions in all situations to prevent crashes like this from happening.

If wrongdoing led to this crash, the party responsible must be held accountable. While no amount of money will heal the pain, it is the only way the law can acknowledge that the surviving family’s suffering is real and that their lives have been changed forever.

May those impacted by this crash find peace and answers that are rightfully theirs.
