Colsen Recalls Nearly 90,000 Tabletop Fire Pits Following Reports of Severe Burn Injuries

New York, NY — Colsen has issued a recall for approximately 89,500 tabletop fire pits after reports of serious burn injuries caused by flame jetting and other hazards associated with the product. The recall notice, published by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), highlights significant safety concerns with these fire pits, which use liquid alcohol as fuel.

The recalled Colsen tabletop fire pits pose a risk of flame jetting, a dangerous phenomenon where flames can suddenly and forcefully escape from the product during refueling if residual fire is present. This can propel burning alcohol onto users or bystanders, causing severe and life-threatening burns.

The fire pits are also prone to invisible flames, fuel spills, and leaks during use, leading to flash fires that can ignite unexpectedly. These hazards can result in serious burns in under a second.

The CPSC has documented 31 incidents of flame jetting or uncontrolled flames, including:

  • 19 burn injuries, two of which involved third-degree burns over more than 40% of the victims’ bodies.
  • At least six cases require surgery, prolonged medical treatment, or resulting in permanent disfigurement or loss of function.

The recall affects seven models of Colsen tabletop fire pits sold between January 2020 and July 2024 at major retailers, including Amazon, Wayfair, Walmart, and Sharper Image, as well as on social media platforms like TikTok and Meta-owned apps. The fire pits were sold in various sizes, shapes, and colors, and their prices ranged from $40 to $90.

Some recalled fire pits were manufactured by another company before Colsen acquired the product line. However, the previous manufacturer was not identified in the recall notice.
