One Person Killed in an Accident with a Parked Semi-truck on Interstate 5 Near Walnut Grove, California

Walnut Grove, Calif. — An accident on Interstate 5 in southern Sacramento County resulted in one fatality. The incident happened on Tuesday morning.

According to reports, a sedan collided with a parked big rig on the shoulder. The impact caused both the sedan and the trailer, which was carrying food products, to catch fire.

The driver of the sedan was pronounced dead at the scene, while the big rig’s driver was not injured.

Public roadways are not where trucks should be parked

These preventable accidents continue to happen. Commercial trucks should never use the highway shoulder as a parking spot. Unfortunately, it happens too often. The worst part is trucking companies will usually try to shift blame in these accidents by faulting drivers who collide with their parked trucks. Yet, federal rules only allow shoulder parking in emergencies, not for convenience.

In our experience, what a trucking company calls an emergency may not always hold under the law. In a recent case we handled, a trucking company claimed a flat tire forced an emergency stop on the shoulder. However, further investigation showed they had been inflating a worn-out tire instead of replacing it. This attempt to save a few hundred dollars in maintenance ended in a tragic loss of life and left a family grieving. This is not an emergency––but an excuse for a preventable incident.

In incidents like this, the trucking company’s records could hold critical information. Maintenance logs might show neglected repairs, while electronic control module data could reveal how long the truck was parked and any system failures. Driver logs and communications may indicate whether this was an emergency or a convenient stop.

Complete transparency from the trucking company and expert analysis are needed to determine if this tragedy could have been avoided.

May the surviving family here find the answers to help them navigate what comes next.
